A man from Ontario faced animal cruelty charges in a Las Vegas court for stealing a flamingo called Peachy from a Las Vegas hotel in a drunken incident, which resulted in international attention. Mitchell Fairbarn, accused of harming the flamingo, pleaded not guilty, but was convicted of felony and misdemeanor animal cruelty charges by the jury. He awaits sentencing and could face up to four years in prison for the felony charge and six months for the misdemeanor.

Fairbarn, a contractor from rural Ontario, claimed he thought taking the flamingo would be a humorous anecdote with his friends during a work trip in Las Vegas, where he consumed an excessive amount of alcohol. The incident occurred at the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel and Casino, where Fairbarn took Peachy, causing the bird injuries and distress.

Video evidence presented in court showed Fairbarn handling the flamingo in an elevator and hotel hallway, with witnesses testifying to the events. The flamingo was later found shaking and bleeding, requiring medical treatment for missing feathers and trauma-related injuries. Despite claiming no malicious intent, Fairbarn admitted to making regrettable decisions while intoxicated.

Fairbarn’s defense lawyer emphasized his client’s remorse and lack of intent to harm the bird, attributing the incident to alcohol-induced poor judgment. The court proceedings revealed that Fairbarn has been under house arrest in Nevada since the incident, with strict bail conditions in place.

After the verdict, the flamingo, Peachy, has recovered from the ordeal, as reported by a spokesperson for Caesars Entertainment, who expressed gratitude for the authorities’ quick response and care for the animals. Animal rights advocates hailed the verdict as a message against animal cruelty, with Nevada aiming to protect its wildlife from such incidents in the future.
