Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s recent visit to Texas to discuss trade and tariffs incurred a total expense of approximately $93,000, as revealed in a decision note obtained by CBC News through a freedom of information request. The trip, which included a two-day preliminary mission to finalize logistics, aimed to maximize outcomes while minimizing costs.

Cost-saving strategies implemented during the trip included securing the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan as a sponsor, resulting in a $7,500 reduction in expenses. Additionally, a cost-effective reception was hosted instead of a pricier dinner or lunch, and staffing levels were kept minimal. The accommodation was secured at government rates to further cut down on costs.

Ford’s itinerary in Texas included visits to Houston, Dallas, and Austin, where he engaged primarily with business leaders and companies. Notably, a planned meeting with Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a prominent ally of former President Trump, did not materialize.

The premier’s office defended the trip, emphasizing the longstanding trade relationship between Texas and Ontario that benefits both regions economically. The visit facilitated discussions with over 10 major employers, laying the foundation for potential new investments amounting to billions of dollars, job creation, and enhanced economic ties between Ontario and the United States.

Opposition leaders criticized the trip as extravagant, with NDP Leader Marit Stiles questioning the return on investment. Interim Liberal Leader John Fraser labeled the visit a “dog and pony show,” urging diversification of trade partnerships beyond the U.S.

Green Party of Ontario Leader Mike Schreiner stressed the importance of transparent spending and accountability in government travel expenses. Despite requests for a breakdown of costs, the premier’s office did not provide detailed expenditure information.

Ford’s trip to Texas sparked debate over its necessity and outcomes, with stakeholders expressing varying opinions on the effectiveness and value of the visit.
