Selena Gomez revealed in a video on Sunday that vaping had altered her voice, addressing discussions about her voice changes over time. The U.S. singer and founder of Rare Beauty makeup line shared in an Instagram story that her voice transformation was a result of heavy nicotine vaping. Gomez emphasized the difficulty of quitting nicotine and advised against vaping, highlighting its detrimental impact on her voice.

Although she did not specify the duration of her vaping habit, Gomez expressed her struggle with quitting and encouraged others facing similar challenges to persevere. The singer has been candid about her health battles, including her Lupus diagnosis in 2015, a condition that she believes affected her vocal cords. In addition, she underwent a kidney transplant in 2017 and disclosed her bipolar disorder diagnosis in the 2022 documentary “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me.”

Health experts caution that vaping poses risks beyond nicotine, with various chemicals present in vape smoke potentially affecting the vocal cords and respiratory system. While formal clinical trials on vaping’s direct impact on vocal cords are lacking, experts warn of the long-term health hazards associated with vaping, including lung damage. Health Canada reports over 1,500 unique chemicals in vaping products, underscoring the need for further research on vaping’s health implications.

Public figures like Gomez raising awareness about the risks of vaping are crucial, as misinformation about its safety persists. Experts advocate for stricter regulations on vaping products to curb the potential epidemic and protect public health. The Canadian government’s pledge to restrict vaping flavors, aimed at curbing youth vaping rates, underscores the urgency of addressing vaping-related concerns. Efforts by organizations like N.B. Lung to advocate for restrictions on tobacco product sales to young individuals reflect ongoing initiatives to mitigate the impact of vaping on public health.
