Deborah Meaden, a prominent figure from Dragons’ Den, has expressed her concerns that the investigation into Angela Rayner’s tax affairs is diverting attention from more pressing matters. The Deputy Prime Minister is facing criticism for reportedly underpaying stamp duty by £40,000 on an £800,000 property in Hove, claiming she followed advice from her legal representatives. It wasn’t until consulting a senior barrister that Rayner realized she had mistakenly paid a lower stamp duty rate, with Labour leader Keir Starmer voicing his support for her.

Rayner has voluntarily referred herself to the independent adviser on ministerial standards, Laurie Magnus, who is expected to present his findings to Prime Minister Keir Starmer by Friday, September 5. In a recent discussion with LBC, Deborah Meaden, aged 66 and a successful business magnate, defended Rayner while acknowledging uncertainty about her political future.

Meaden emphasized that while the tax issue is important, it should not overshadow critical matters, suggesting that vested interests might be behind efforts to undermine individuals. She advocated for a more stringent approach towards taxing the ultra-wealthy to ensure they contribute their fair share. Meaden highlighted the necessity of a wealth tax, emphasizing the importance of everyone, particularly affluent individuals and businesses, fulfilling their tax obligations.

Regarding the government’s business policies, Meaden praised Labour’s initiatives aimed at addressing common business challenges but pointed out certain missteps, such as the National Insurance increase for employers. She stressed the significance of proper plan implementation and the need for patience to witness the desired outcomes.

Dismissing rumors about her potential candidacy for Mayor of London in 2028, Meaden clarified that she is not pursuing such a role due to her limited presence in London and believes others are better suited for the position.
