Android phones continue to dominate the global market, offering affordability and customization options that appeal to consumers. The diverse range of handsets available from various manufacturers further contributes to their popularity. However, a notable issue arises in the varying support durations for different devices.

For instance, flagship models like the Galaxy S26 and Google Pixel phones enjoy up to seven years of software updates and security patches. In contrast, some older Galaxy A-series phones receive only around four years of support, while certain devices from Xiaomi and Motorola may see updates for just three years.

While devices won’t cease functioning abruptly, they will eventually stop receiving crucial security updates and software enhancements, potentially sooner than users anticipate.

Android updates typically fall into two main categories. Firstly, major Android version updates are released annually by Google, introducing new features and system improvements. Secondly, security updates are issued throughout the year to address vulnerabilities, fix bugs, and safeguard devices from potential threats.

Many Android manufacturers, such as Samsung and Google, have extended their support timelines in recent years. However, older devices may not receive the same level of ongoing support.

To determine the remaining lifespan of an Android phone, users can easily check the expected support period and update end dates by finding their specific phone model in the Settings menu and visiting endoflife.date. The website also uses color-coded warnings to indicate when a device is nearing or has reached the end of support.

Even after reaching its end of life, a phone can still perform basic functions like calls and messages. Yet, it will miss out on new features and security enhancements, potentially exposing it to cybersecurity risks.

Continuing to use an unsupported device, as TechAdvisor warns, poses heightened risks for activities like online banking, shopping, email access, and password storage, as unpatched security vulnerabilities could be exploited by malicious software.

It’s advisable to check your phone’s update schedule promptly to stay informed about the support end date and consider upgrading to a newer device when necessary.
