A security guard’s attempt to overturn his conviction for planning to abduct, sexually assault, and murder TV presenter Holly Willoughby has been unsuccessful.
Gavin Plumb, who was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 16 years in July last year, had been found guilty of soliciting murder and inciting others to commit rape and kidnapping.
Described as a significant threat to women, Plumb caused fear and alarm to the former Good Morning Britain host.
At the Royal Courts of Justice in London on Tuesday, Plumb’s appeal against his sentence was rebuffed by the Court of Appeal. The judges, including Justice Edis, deemed the crimes so severe that a life sentence was warranted.
The court highlighted the disturbing nature of Plumb’s intentions towards Holly Willoughby and emphasized the gravity of the harm he intended to inflict.
Plumb’s defense argued that his plans were merely fantasy due to his physical limitations, including obesity and lack of resources. However, the court upheld the original sentence, emphasizing the seriousness of the offenses and the danger posed by Plumb.
During the trial at Chelmsford Crown Court, evidence revealed that Essex Police discovered chloroform bottles and an abduction kit at Plumb’s residence, indicating his elaborate kidnapping scheme.
Plumb’s sinister plot involved ambushing the presenter at her home, with intentions to harm her family as well. The judge emphasized the severity of Plumb’s actions and the real threat he posed.
Having a history of violent offenses, Plumb’s disturbing plans were exposed during online interactions with an undercover officer, leading to his arrest before he could carry out the attack.
The court’s decision to uphold the life sentence reflects the seriousness of the crimes and the potential danger posed by the convicted individual.
