UK watchdog ASA has banned easyJet from advertising carry-on baggage fees starting at £5.99 due to misleading passengers. ASA found insufficient evidence to support the claim that this price was available across various flight routes and dates. easyJet is now required to cease using the phrase and ensure that the lowest “from” price for large cabin bags is prevalent across a significant portion of flights in the future.
easyJet defended its advertised price, stating it was accurate and accessible on multiple routes. However, the airline acknowledged that prices could fluctuate based on factors like availability and operational expenses. The actual price for a specific booking is prominently displayed before purchase.
Following a consumer group Which? investigation, it was discovered that the price for adding a large cabin bag exceeded £5.99 on all 520 easyJet flights analyzed. The lowest price found was £23.49, with an average of £30. Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel, criticized airlines for using low headline fares and then charging high prices for standard cabin bags. He advised customers to consider airlines without cabin bag add-ons for potentially lower costs.
In response to the ASA ruling, easyJet stated that they aim to provide transparent pricing information to customers and have made adjustments to ensure clarity on fees and charges. The airline assured that they always offer some large cabin bags at the lowest price possible.
