Nova Scotia writer Rachel Reid has generously contributed $300,000 to the Annapolis Valley Regional Library to prevent the closure of five branches. Reid explained her motivation to support the community and emphasized the importance of utilizing success for positive impact.
Earlier, the Annapolis Valley Regional Library had allocated $80,000 from its reserves to keep the branches operational until September 30. Despite receiving partial funding from municipalities, additional support was needed to maintain the libraries in Hantsport, Kentville, Lawrencetown, Port Williams, and Middleton until the 2026-27 fiscal year.
The CEO of the library, Julia Merritt, expressed gratitude for Reid’s substantial donation, ensuring the continued operation of the five branches. The funds are primarily intended for staffing costs, emphasizing the essential role libraries play in communities.
In a statement, Merritt acknowledged Reid’s significant contribution as one of the largest private gifts received by the library. Reid highlighted her personal connection to libraries, crediting them for her journey to becoming a successful author and emphasizing the need for adequate funding for essential services.
While Reid’s donation is crucial, the library stressed the ongoing necessity of stable public funding and strong partnerships to sustain library services long-term. Merritt emphasized the current funding model’s need for revision to ensure the library’s future sustainability.
The Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism, and Heritage in Nova Scotia commended Reid’s donation, indicating a commitment to collaborate with the library and municipal partners to establish a sustainable operating model. The department reaffirmed its support for public libraries, highlighting the importance of community contributions in maintaining library services.
Reid’s contribution will be celebrated at a special public event next month, reinforcing the significance of libraries in promoting literacy and community engagement. The library and government are dedicated to ensuring continued access to vibrant public libraries across the region.
