A disruption occurred during a match at the Australian Open when a ball kid became ill and vomited on the court. The players, Stefano Tsitsipas from Greece and Shintaro Mochizuki from Japan, were competing in the first round when the incident happened.
Mochizuki took the first set 6-4, but Tsitsipas made a comeback in the second set, winning 6-3. As the third set began, the ball kid fell sick at the back of the court, leading to a brief pause in the game while medical staff attended to the youngster. This interruption followed another match suspension involving Naomi Osaka earlier at the Rod Laver Arena.
The match commentators from TNT Sports initially expressed confusion over the sudden stoppage of play. After a short delay for cleanup and medical attention, the game resumed, with Tsitsipas ultimately winning the next two sets 6-2. His victory secured a second-round encounter with Tomas Machac from Czechia. Unfortunately, this incident was not the first time a ball kid faced health issues at the tournament.
In a separate incident earlier in the week, another ball kid collapsed during a match between Zeynep Sonmez of Turkiye and Ekaterina Alexandrova from Russia. Sonmez quickly assisted the girl, helping her recover before play resumed. Sonmez emphasized the importance of being a good human being over being a good tennis player in such situations.
TNT commentator Catherine Whitaker praised Sonmez’s quick response, highlighting her attentiveness and compassion towards the ball kid’s well-being. The incidents underscore the physical demands and unexpected challenges faced by ball kids during high-pressure tennis matches.
