The BBC is reportedly considering using iPlayer streaming data to identify individuals who have not paid for a TV licence. Currently priced at £174.50 per year, a TV licence is required for watching or recording live TV programs on any channel, as well as for viewing content on BBC iPlayer, whether live or on catch-up.
According to The Telegraph, there are plans to link up to 40 million BBC iPlayer accounts with a database that monitors TV licence ownership associated with addresses. Upon registering for a BBC iPlayer account, users are required to provide their email address, date of birth, and postcode.
In the fiscal year 2024/25, the BBC collected £3.8 billion from TV licences, but it is estimated that non-payment of fees is causing the corporation to lose up to £550 million annually. A TV Licensing spokesperson mentioned that leveraging available data helps in understanding viewing habits and BBC services usage for better fee collection.
Streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5 do not necessitate a TV licence for catch-up viewing. However, a TV licence is required for live streaming through these platforms, and failure to have one while watching live TV could lead to a potential £1,000 fine.
Individuals claiming Pension Credit and aged 75 or above are eligible for a free TV licence. Students living away from home may also be covered under their parents’ TV licence if watching on devices like phones, tablets, or laptops, excluding televisions or desktop computers connected to the mains.
Special provisions include a 50% discount for households with blind or severely sight-impaired individuals and a concessionary TV licence costing £7.50 per room, flat, or bungalow for those in residential care or sheltered accommodation.
Typically, the TV licence fee increases annually in April based on the previous September Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate. This year’s confirmed inflation rate of 3.8% suggests a potential increase in the TV licence fee to over £180. However, there has been no official announcement regarding a fee hike by the Government for this April.
