A young woman shouted six chilling words before tragically gouging out her own eyes outside a church. Kaylee Muthart, who turns 28 today, lives with optimism despite being blind.
At the age of 20, Kaylee lost her sight permanently due to a meth-induced psychotic episode. The incident occurred after she believed that removing her eyes would bring her closer to God and save the world.
Diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Kaylee’s downward spiral began after consuming meth-laced drugs. On the day she became blind, she had taken a high dose of meth following a breakup and a mental breakdown.
In a drug-induced haze, Kaylee wandered to a church and, in a delusion, felt compelled to sacrifice her sight to save the world. She screamed, “I want to see the light!” as she gouged out her own eyes.
Despite the horrific ordeal, Kaylee, a Florida resident, has displayed remarkable courage. She attended a blind school, completed her high school diploma using braille and assistive technologies, and underwent rehabilitation to overcome addiction.
Reflecting on her life post-injury, Kaylee expressed curiosity about the world she can no longer see. She remains hopeful that one day she may regain her vision through divine intervention.
Kaylee now wears prosthetic eyes and views her blindness as a safeguard against relapse into drug addiction. She believes being blind is preferable to being entangled in substance abuse.
