BT has announced a crucial update regarding landline services, signaling a major shift for users relying on older copper cables. These cables, which have facilitated communication for over a century, are now set to be phased out within a year, with the official cutoff date scheduled for January 31, 2027.

The transition to new digital services that utilize internet connectivity for making calls is imperative, given the outdated and overburdened nature of the current copper infrastructure. BT’s Digital Voice system represents the latest advancement in this transition, boasting enhanced stability, improved call quality, and added features like call forwarding and better call screening to combat scams and unwanted solicitations.

While over three million households in the UK have already made the switch to Digital Voice, many more are yet to transition. BT emphasizes the importance of acting promptly, warning that failing to do so could result in disruptions to phone and broadband services as the deadline approaches.

The process of switching to digital services is relatively straightforward, with most existing BT handsets already compatible with digital landlines. Users can retain their current phone numbers, and costs should remain unchanged. In most cases, transitioning involves connecting the home phone to the broadband hub instead of the traditional wall socket. For those facing difficulties, reaching out to the provider or arranging for technical support may be necessary.

BT also urges customers with specific requirements, such as those using telecare devices or pendant alarms, to notify their provider promptly to ensure appropriate assistance is arranged.

As the phase-out of the copper network draws near, it is essential for users to verify their readiness for the change. Ensuring a smooth transition is vital to bolstering the UK’s digital infrastructure, as emphasized by BT Group Chief Executive Allison Kirkby, who underscores the importance of investing in robust, modern connectivity to drive growth and opportunity across homes, businesses, and communities.
