Serita Thurton netted two goals in the opening half as the bottom-ranked Calgary Wild caused an upset by defeating the top-seeded Ottawa Rapid 4-3 in a Northern Super League matchup held at McMahon Stadium on Saturday. Kahli Johnson struck first for the hosts in the 15th minute, putting them ahead 1-0, before Thurton doubled the lead around 13 minutes later.
Ottawa responded with a goal from Jung Min-Young in the 38th minute, followed by Melanie Forbes equalizing at 2-2 just before halftime. Thurton then secured her second goal just before the break, propelling the Wild into the lead for good. Jorian Baucom also found the back of the net for the Wild, who now hold a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris managed to score a penalty for the Rapid in the 86th minute, but it wasn’t enough as they fell to 10 wins, three losses, and three draws, ending their 10-game unbeaten run. Despite having 54% possession, Ottawa was outshot by the Wild 16-13 (with 9 shots on target to 6).
The Wild earned six of the 11 corners in the game, with Ottawa receiving one yellow card and one red card.
In another match, Jessica De Filippo scored a crucial goal in the 57th minute to level the score, and then added a second goal five minutes into stoppage time in the second half to secure a 2-1 victory for the Vancouver Rise over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C. Jordyn Rhodes had opened the scoring for the Tides with a goal in the 19th minute.
The Rise, currently in fifth place, commanded 56% of possession and outshot the visiting Tides 18-13, including 6 shots on target to 4. Halifax took four of the six corners in the game, while Vancouver received two of the three yellow cards issued.
