The Canadian women’s basketball team emerged victorious with an 83-53 win over Mexico in the FIBA Women’s Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament held in Guadalajara. This win brings Canada one step closer to qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Canada clinched the sole spot in the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament 2028, the final stage for Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games qualification.

Kayla Alexander led Canada with 14 points, supported by four rebounds and three assists. Agot Makeer contributed 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting along with three rebounds and three assists without any turnovers. The Canadian team dominated the tournament, achieving a perfect 5-0 record by defeating Senegal, the Philippines, Mexico, and New Zealand before claiming victory over the host nation in the final.

Head coach Nell Fortner expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “The goal all summer long was to win this tournament, and we did that. I’m super proud of my team.” The team showcased a blend of young talent and experienced players who effectively united on the court for the first time. Syla Swords scored 12 points, while Yvonne Ejim delivered a notable performance with a 10-point, 17-rebound double-double, also contributing two assists and a block. Ejim’s exceptional performance earned her a game-high efficiency rating of 22 and a plus-32 rating.

Fortner highlighted the team’s defensive strategy as a key factor in their success, emphasizing a focus on limiting the opponent’s three-point shots. By implementing a strong defensive approach, Canada stifled Mexico’s offense, holding them to a mere 5-for-26 from beyond the arc. The coach attributed their defensive prowess as the catalyst for their offensive success, culminating in a significant victory.
