Canada’s men’s basketball team is preparing for the next phase of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA World Cup with some notable absences. General manager Rowan Barrett revealed the roster for the Americas qualifiers, featuring standout players like Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Luguentz Dort from the Atlanta Hawks. The team will face Panama in Panama City and host Argentina in Quebec City.

Although star players like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dillon Brooks will be missing, Barrett explained that various factors such as injuries, fatigue, and contract issues influenced the selection process. The team will count on a mix of experienced and upcoming talents to maintain its winning streak in Group F.

With a pool of over 50 committed athletes, Canada Basketball aims to build a resilient team capable of executing under pressure. Alexander-Walker, coming off a stellar season, has been named the NBA’s most improved player, showcasing the team’s depth and potential.

Veteran forward Kelly Olynyk brings leadership and experience to the squad, while Dort will have the opportunity to play in front of his home crowd in Quebec City. Despite the challenges of assembling a competitive team, Barrett emphasized the importance of continuity and teamwork in achieving success on the international stage.
