During a military conference in Victoria, B.C., Canada’s top military commander, Gen. Jennie Carignan, stated that the Canadian cadet and her instructor, who were highlighted in a controversial social media post by U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, will have the autonomy to determine how they wish to address the situation. Carignan emphasized that both individuals are being supported by the Canadian military in the wake of the contentious post, allowing them the freedom to decide on their response.

The post shared by Hegseth featured an image from the Cadet Training Centre in Vernon, B.C., showcasing two female cadets in uniform with a caption that read “this is real,” accompanied by a Canadian flag. The reaction to Hegseth’s post online consisted of derogatory comments targeting the appearance of the individuals in the photo, sparking significant backlash from the Canadian public.

Carignan underscored that the primary focus remains on supporting the affected individuals within the military. She expressed pride in the Canadian Armed Forces and stressed the professionalism and competency of the personnel. Carignan mentioned that the issue concerning Hegseth’s post would be addressed at a later time.

The Army Cadet League of Canada denounced the online harassment directed at cadets and their accomplishments, stating that disparaging remarks towards youth striving to improve themselves and serve their communities are unacceptable. The league extended its unwavering support to cadets, adult staff, volunteers, and officers committed to enhancing communities and nurturing future Canadian leaders.

Amid escalating trade tensions between Canada and the United States following failed negotiations, President Trump’s administration imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian goods in August, with retaliatory duties by Canada set to be enforced soon. Trump and his officials have been targeting Canada through public remarks and social media, with derogatory comments also directed at Canada’s military by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.

The recent controversies have generated pushback from Canadian politicians and military figures, with calls for respectful dialogue and recognition of the historical collaboration between Canada and the U.S. in promoting freedom and justice. Hegseth is facing internal pressure due to ongoing military challenges and resignations within the U.S. Army leadership, including the recent departure of Army Secretary Dan Driscoll following reported tensions with Hegseth.
