Canadian director Matt Johnson appeared relaxed in the days leading up to his wedding and the start of filming his next movie. Johnson discussed his latest project, “Tony,” a biopic focusing on the early life of renowned chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain. Despite Bourdain’s iconic status and tragic passing in 2018, Johnson felt comfortable delving into his story.
Initially not planning to make a film about Bourdain, Johnson’s perspective changed after meeting actor Dominic Sessa, who portrays Bourdain in the movie. Their shared outlook on various issues sparked the idea of exploring them together through the film.
The script draws from Bourdain’s book “Kitchen Confidential,” condensing stories from his youth into a narrative set during his first summer as a chef in Provincetown, Mass. By focusing on a younger Bourdain, Johnson aimed to sidestep the pressure of portraying the more established figure that many fans idolize.
The movie delves into Bourdain’s formative years, exploring aspects of his childhood, relationships, and self-perception as he entered adulthood. Johnson emphasized creating a relatable and human portrayal of Bourdain, rather than catering to idealized perceptions held by fans.
“Tony” is set to premiere in theaters across Canada on August 14. The film aims to offer a unique perspective on Bourdain’s life and legacy, resonating with audiences who admire and relate to the influential figure.
