Canadian flag football quarterback Sara Parker expressed her disbelief in achieving a fourth world title for Canada’s senior women’s team and securing a spot in the 2028 Summer Olympics. Parker emphasized the immense pride she felt, attributing the success to the collective effort of her teammates and supporters. Reflecting on the championship victory over the United States, Parker highlighted the dedication and hard work that went into achieving this milestone.
During a visit to CBC Sports headquarters in Toronto, Parker, accompanied by Canadian national senior men’s team player Guillaume Béland, discussed the significance of flag football’s inclusion in the upcoming Olympics. At 26, Parker has played a pivotal role in the sport’s development, establishing programs at various educational institutions in Quebec.
Parker expressed optimism about the sport’s future growth following its Olympic recognition, aiming to inspire young athletes to dream of becoming Olympians. The qualification of both Canadian men’s and women’s teams for the 2028 Games further solidified the potential for flag football’s expansion.
Béland, a key player for the Canadian men’s team, shared his exhilaration at securing a bronze medal and Olympic berth with a crucial interception during the competition. The former tackle football player highlighted the team’s resilience and ability to bounce back from setbacks, showcasing a strong performance throughout the tournament.
Transitioning from tackle football to flag football presented challenges for Béland, requiring adjustments in gameplay tactics. Despite the differences, Béland acknowledged the transferable skills from contact football and emphasized the importance of adapting to the new format.
Looking ahead, both Parker and Béland plan to continue representing Canada on the international stage, participating in training camps and engaging with global competition. They aspire to set a standard in flag football, promoting the sport’s growth and inspiring future generations of athletes to pursue excellence in the game.
