Carrie-Anne Moss was engrossed in her beloved book, “Women Who Run with the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype” by Clarissa Pinkola Estés, specifically a chapter about Baba Yaga, when she received an offer to join the new series, “Yaga.” To Moss, the timing of this offer felt like a meaningful coincidence. In a conversation with CBC’s Eli Glasner, Moss shared that she has owned the book since 1999, and the chapter she was reading resonated with the project presented to her.

“Yaga,” a dark mystery-thriller created by Canadian playwright Kat Sandler, is an adaptation of her 2019 stage play. The series stars Noah Reid as private investigator Charlie Rapp and Hudson Williams as missing heir Henry Park in the fictional coastal town of Whittock, where the story intertwines with the Slavic legend of Baba Yaga.

Sandler reached out to Moss with a letter outlining why she envisioned Moss for the role of Katherine Hargrove, a professor attracted to younger men. After reviewing the letter, pitch, and scripts, Moss made the decision to accept the role.

Returning to Victoria for filming has brought Moss back to her roots in British Columbia, where she spent summers on the island with her relatives. Growing up in Burnaby and later residing in Granville Island during high school, Moss’s passion for acting was ignited by watching television shows that stirred deep emotions within her.

From her early aspirations to be an actress, Moss pursued her dream, eventually landing roles in various projects, including her breakthrough role as Trinity in “The Matrix.” Despite facing challenges when the show moved to Los Angeles, Moss persevered, driven by her genuine passion for acting.

Reflecting on her journey, Moss emphasizes the importance of trusting the process and embracing disappointments as opportunities for growth. As she navigates her career and personal life, including raising her children, Moss remains dedicated to her craft and continues to explore the profound impact of storytelling and human creativity, all while contemplating the implications of artificial intelligence on the creative landscape.

As Moss embarks on new endeavors and contemplates the future, she remains focused on the present, embracing the opportunities that come her way, such as her involvement in “Yaga,” a project that serendipitously aligned with her life at just the right moment.
