More than 40 well-known figures, such as Arlene Phillips, Mark Bonnar, Jason Isaacs, and Bill Nighy, have united to urge for the elimination of the “harsh” two-child benefit limit in the upcoming budget announcement.

In a collective message to Keir Starmer, coordinated by Trussell foodbank charity, the celebrities emphasized the urgent need to abolish the two-child limit, highlighting its detrimental impact on 109 additional children daily. They stressed that the restriction penalizes children and forces families to rely on food banks, condemning the ongoing hardships faced by families.

Prominent personalities including Simon Pegg, Stanley Tucci, Jodie Whittaker, Romesh Ranganathan, and Levi Roots have signed the letter, expressing their solidarity in calling for the removal of the limit. Levi Roots, known for Reggae Reggae sauce, shared his personal experience of growing up in poverty and emphasized the necessity of governmental action to alleviate child poverty.

Actor Mark Bonnar criticized the welfare system for punishing children with siblings, stating that it should prioritize supporting families lacking essential resources. The letter underscored that eliminating the two-child limit would lift hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty and provide them with a better future.

The collective effort aims to push for immediate action to address child poverty, with both Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves signaling their commitment to scrapping the two-child benefit limit. The current policy, implemented in 2017, restricts financial support to the first two children in most households, leading to increased rates of child poverty.

The celebrities’ plea emphasizes the urgency of the situation, stressing that removing the two-child limit is crucial to safeguarding children from hunger and ensuring they have equal opportunities in life. They call upon the government to fulfill its duty in tackling child poverty by taking decisive action without delay.
