A criminal who kidnapped, sexually assaulted, and killed a six-year-old girl has been executed while on death row. Bryan Frederick Jennings, at the age of 20, was found guilty over 45 years ago for the murder, abduction, burglary, and sexual assault of Rebecca Kunash. Jennings took the girl to a canal in his car where he raped her and then caused her fatal injuries by violently swinging her to the ground, leading to her death by drowning.
After decades in custody at the prison near Starke, Florida, Jennings, now 66 years old, underwent lethal injection as the 16th execution in Florida this year. Despite being a former US Marine, Jennings chose not to make a final statement before his execution. The Department of Corrections confirmed the execution proceeded smoothly without any issues.
Jennings was arrested shortly after the girl’s assault due to an unrelated traffic violation, matching the description of a suspect seen near the Kunash residence at the time of the girl’s disappearance. Evidence such as shoeprints, fingerprints, wet clothing, and hair linked him to the crime scene. He was twice sentenced to death for the 1979 Brevard County murder, with both convictions overturned on appeal. A subsequent trial in 1986 resulted in another conviction and reaffirmed death penalty, alongside life sentences for additional charges.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who authorized the execution, has overseen more executions this year than any other Florida governor since the reinstitution of the death penalty in 1976. The governor emphasized his commitment to providing closure to victims’ families with the execution of long-pending cases. The state is set to carry out two more executions in November and December, potentially raising the total to 18 executions this year.
