A man expecting a child, who was in a coma following a severe car accident, regained consciousness briefly and pointed towards his pregnant girlfriend as the one he held responsible for his condition.

Daniel Waterman suffered serious injuries in a car crash with Leigha Mumby, including broken bones, spinal damage, and punctured lungs, leading to him slipping into a coma since February 9. In May, Daniel communicated with detectives using a whiteboard, indicating that a heated argument had erupted between him and Mumby over her pregnancy and a text message from a female friend.

According to Daniel’s account, the dispute escalated while Mumby was allegedly driving recklessly on Interstate 95 in Flagler County, Florida. Despite Daniel’s attempts to escape the car, Mumby allegedly accelerated, reaching speeds of 80-90 mph, ultimately crashing into a tree.

Although Mumby survived with injuries and gave birth later, she claimed no recollection of the events leading to the crash. Investigations supported Daniel’s version through the car’s data recorder. Daniel, initially showing signs of improvement, was transferred to a hospital in Syracuse in July. Mumby faced charges of reckless driving and causing bodily harm.

Tragically, Daniel passed away on October 8 due to pneumonia, leading to Mumby being charged with vehicular homicide and detained. Daniel’s family is now seeking custody of the baby pending a paternity test, vowing to honor his memory and provide a loving environment for the child. Mumby has pleaded not guilty to the initial charges but has not entered a plea for the homicide charge.
