In the lead-up to the Iraq war in 2003, I played a direct role in the decision-making process, a responsibility I take very seriously and will carry with me for life. As the UK, we were the junior partner to the United States, a characteristic of the longstanding ‘special relationship.’ However, there were notable distinctions from the current US conflict with Iran.
One significant disparity was the context in which decisions were made, following the traumatic 9/11 attacks just eighteen months earlier. These attacks, unprovoked and resulting in significant loss of life, deeply affected the nation and influenced the course of action regarding Iraq.
Unlike the present situation involving Iran, the dialogue and decision-making process during the Iraq war involved a level of thoughtful discourse and collaboration between leaders, such as US President George W. Bush and his advisors. Despite differing opinions, there was a continuous exchange that allowed for private disagreements and discussions.
Contrasting the approach to the Iraq war, the current conflict with Iran under US President Donald Trump lacks the same level of thoughtfulness and strategic planning. Trump’s impulsive decision-making driven by ego has led to a more chaotic and unpredictable situation.
Having personal experience with the Iranian regime through multiple visits to the country, including an incident in 2015, I am well aware of the challenges and complexities involved. While acknowledging the oppressive nature of the regime, any military action against Iran must be carefully planned to avoid unintended consequences and further destabilization in the region.
Reflecting on the current events, our Prime Minister’s decision to distance the UK from the conflict and prioritize national interests aligns with a cautious and strategic approach. The importance of thorough planning and consideration before engaging in warfare cannot be overstated, as wars inevitably result in unforeseen consequences.
