The latest data reveals that over a million current account switches were made for the third consecutive year. Nationwide attracted the most customers, with 41,450 opting for the building society due to its attractive switching offer and profit-sharing scheme bonuses. Monzo and NatWest also saw significant customer increases, with a total of 350,114 switches in the final quarter of the year.

While 1,054,521 switches were recorded in 2025, this number was lower compared to the volumes in the previous two years due to fluctuations in interest rates. Conversely, Santander, Halifax, and JP Morgan’s Chase experienced losses in current accounts during the same period.

John Dentry, a product manager at Pay.UK, which operates CASS, highlighted the competitive banking market’s health, emphasizing the importance of consumers finding accounts that suit their needs easily and with confidence.

In other news, Waymo, a US firm, is planning to introduce driverless cabs on UK roads starting this autumn, aiming to revolutionize taxi services with their autonomous vehicles. The company’s technology is expected to enhance road safety and offer new transportation options to customers.

Additionally, a report predicts that numerous struggling companies, dubbed “zombie” firms, may face insolvency in 2026 due to various financial pressures. The report highlights a concerning rise in companies experiencing critical financial distress, particularly in the hospitality sector.

On a positive note, Marks and Spencer was declared the strongest brand in the UK, despite facing challenges like a cyber attack. The company’s resilience was recognized in the YouGov BrandIndex rankings, with other top brands including IKEA, Samsung, John Lewis, and Netflix.

Lastly, easyJet has reported record summer bookings, signaling a positive start to the year for the airline industry. The company’s plans for expansion and potential collaboration with Starlink for in-flight Wi-Fi services have garnered attention amidst evolving market conditions.
