Madeline Buss, a resident of Vancouver, shares her personal journey in this First Person column. She faced a challenging situation when she signed a lease for her first apartment while her mother was admitted to the ICU on the same day.

Dealing with feelings of guilt and questioning her role as a daughter, Madeline recounts her mother’s ongoing medical battles, including multiple sclerosis, past chemotherapy for bone cancer, depression, and anxiety. The unexpected news of her mother needing a heart transplant left her shaken as she signed the lease papers in a daze.

Despite the emotional turmoil, Madeline found herself reflecting on her unconventional relationship with her mother. Growing up as an “Old Soul,” she felt a deep sense of responsibility towards her mother’s well-being, especially during times of health crises.

As her mother’s health deteriorated before the pandemic, Madeline took on more caregiving duties, juggling school and household responsibilities. The decision to pursue her university education in Vancouver meant grappling with the internal conflict of balancing personal aspirations with familial obligations.

Supported by her stepfather, who encouraged her to prioritize self-care, Madeline learned the importance of reciprocal relationships and allowing others to care for her in return. While the physical distance strained their interactions, Madeline and her mother navigated their evolving bond through phone conversations and occasional visits.

Acknowledging the shift in caregiving roles, Madeline found solace in her stepfather’s dedication to her mother’s well-being. Despite the challenges of being away during critical moments, she gradually embraced the idea of finding fulfillment in taking charge of her own life’s direction.

As Madeline continues to adjust to this new chapter, she grapples with the lingering guilt of not being constantly by her mother’s side. However, she finds comfort in the evolving dynamics of their relationship and the realization that self-fulfillment is an essential part of caregiving.
