The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is cautioning drivers with personalized number plates about potential fines of up to £1,000 for failing to act promptly. Responsible for registering and licensing drivers and vehicles in Great Britain, the DVLA manages over 47 million vehicle records and nearly 53 million driver records. It also administers the collection and enforcement of vehicle excise duty, generating £8.4 billion in 2024/25.

To ensure compliance and track vehicles effectively, the DVLA recently issued a social media alert targeting individuals with personalized number plates. The message emphasized the need for renewing registrations that haven’t been updated in the last 10 years. Renewal is cost-free, and drivers are advised to review their documents to identify any expirations. Failure to renew could lead to penalties, MOT test failures, and potential loss of the registration number.

According to the DVLA website, if a personalized registration hasn’t been renewed within a decade, action is required this year. Checking the expiry date on the relevant documents is crucial, depending on whether the registration has been linked to a vehicle in the past or not.

For lapsed personal registration plates, fines of up to £1,000, MOT test failures, and risk of losing the registration number are possible consequences. If the plate isn’t currently associated with a vehicle, checking the V750 certificate is recommended. If the plate was previously linked to a vehicle but is now on retention, drivers should refer to the V778 retention document and renew the registration number via mail.

The UK boasts 45 million personalized number plates, indicating their popularity among drivers and collectors. Notably, the most expensive plate, ’25 0′, fetched an impressive £518,000 at auction in 2014 due to its connection with the iconic Ferrari 250 TR and Ferrari 250 GTO models.
