Ed Sheeran’s performances at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts have been called off due to severe weather alerts, adding to the challenges faced by a tour marked by controversy following the removal of Macklemore for making pro-Palestinian remarks on stage. The recent cancellations at the venue owned by billionaire Robert Kraft come after a series of lineup changes sparked by the decision to drop Macklemore from the U.S. leg of the tour.

The decision to cancel the Friday and Saturday concerts at Gillette Stadium was made based on weather forecasts predicting strong winds in Foxborough, where the stadium is situated. The announcement, shared via an Instagram post by Messina Touring, stated that refunds for all tickets would be processed through the original point of purchase.

Meanwhile, Macklemore, who was removed from the tour, revealed plans for his own tour supporting Palestine, criticizing what he described as censorship by the “billionaire class.” This move came after an independent UN commission and Amnesty International characterized Israel’s actions against Palestinians as genocide, a claim consistently denied by Israel.

Before being removed from the lineup, Macklemore had performed at two shows in New Jersey during Sheeran’s Loop Tour, where he expressed support for Palestine. The decision to remove Macklemore was linked to concerns raised by stadium owners, including Kraft, who deemed Macklemore’s performances as crossing a line due to his past controversial statements.

As a result of Macklemore’s removal, several other artists, including Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe, Finneas, and Sheeran’s backing band, withdrew from the tour, citing the importance of addressing sensitive issues such as civilian casualties in conflicts. Despite the lineup changes and controversies, Sheeran continued his tour, addressing the audience at a recent show in Philadelphia, expressing his reluctance to be a politically vocal artist.

Amidst the unfolding events, fans have been seeking refunds for tickets, with the Massachusetts attorney general intervening to ensure consumers have a clear path to refunds following lineup changes. Ticketmaster, the ticketing platform for the concerts, made an exception for the affected shows after the attorney general’s intervention.

Overall, the tour disruptions and lineup changes have generated mixed reactions from fans and critics, highlighting the complexities of balancing artistic expression with social and political issues in the entertainment industry.
