An elderly man, aged 86, passed away following an alleged robbery at his residence, leaving locals saddened by the loss of a valued member of the community. John Burke, who had been in poor health, lived in a ground floor flat with his wife and was reportedly targeted by a suspected serial burglar named Ashley Malcolm, 39. Malcolm stands accused of the murder that occurred after the incident at John’s home in Hackney, northeast London, on the morning of Monday, September 29. Despite being assaulted and hospitalized, the pensioner was later discharged but unfortunately passed away the next day.

A resident, preferring to remain anonymous, expressed sorrow over the situation, highlighting how they interacted with John regularly, assisting him given his declining health. Describing John as amiable and an integral part of the neighborhood, the resident emphasized the injustice of preying on someone already vulnerable. It was mentioned that John had a son who frequently visited him. Subsequently, a murder investigation was initiated following additional medical findings provided to the police.

Ashley Malcolm, residing on Reighton Road in Hackney, is set to appear at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, November 11, facing charges of murder. Acting Det Chief Supt Brittany Clarke acknowledged the community’s concerns and extended condolences to John’s loved ones, emphasizing the swift action taken by officers in response to new information.

Malcolm faces separate charges of robbery, along with allegations of two other burglaries and one attempted break-in within Hackney in September. These incidents include a reported burglary at Gransden Road, a burglary at Brooke Road, and an attempted burglary at Stamford Hill. The Brooke Road burglary was reported the day after occurring, while the attempted break-in at Stamford Hill prompted a swift police response.
