A senior thief in Mallorca, Spain, targeted a British holidaymaker at Palma de Mallorca Airport, resulting in a loss of £1700 before the vacation even began. The suspect, believed to be in his 70s, used a walking frame to discreetly steal from tourists landing at the airport. Mallorca attracts over two million British visitors annually with its sun, sea, and sand allure.
Airport surveillance footage captured the elderly thief, disguised in a loose shirt and trainers, cleverly concealing stolen items within his walking frame seat before swiftly leaving the scene unnoticed. Referred to as the “zimmerframe bandit” by local media, he used the mobility aid both for movement and as a cover for his criminal activities.
The thief’s spree ended on August 18 following an investigation by Palma de Mallorca’s security team, aided by CCTV identification. Collaborating with Spanish national police, the airport apprehended the suspect in Palma in connection to the £1700 theft from the British victim. Authorities have not disclosed the full scope of the senior’s alleged criminal actions at the airport.
Law enforcement at Mallorca’s main airport has been active in August, resulting in 13 arrests for offenses like document forgery, theft, and assault. Authorities are also conducting checks on passengers carrying more than €4400 into the popular holiday destination.
