Evil GP Thomas Kwan faced a violent assault in prison before confessing to trying to kill his mother’s partner. The physician posed as a Covid nurse in an attempt to murder Patrick O’Hara due to a dispute over his mother’s will. Patrick, aged 72 at the time, nearly lost his life after Dr. Kwan administered a fake injection containing a potentially deadly insecticide.
Initially, Kwan tried to poison Patrick with thallium-laced alcohol, which inadvertently endangered Torquil Gundlach, Patrick’s son-in-law. Torquil expressed shock at the sinister scheme, revealing his concern for his children upon discovering a tainted bottle of vodka sent by Kwan from a fictitious ‘gentlemen’s wine and drink club.’
While awaiting trial for attempted murder, Kwan suffered a severe beating and was transferred to HMP Hull, far from his residence in Ingleby Barwick. Subsequently, he was relocated to Frankland prison in Durham. An insider disclosed that Kwan sustained significant injuries during the assault, prompting him to change his plea to guilty for attempted murder, aiming to swiftly resolve the case.
Kwan is now serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 31.5 years, which will be extended following his admission of the second murder attempt on Mr. O’Hara and the poisoning of Mr. Gundlach. He is ineligible for parole until the age of 73, yet his wife remains supportive. She emphasized her belief in Kwan’s innocence and loyalty, vowing to stand by him until the end.
In a previous interview following his life imprisonment, Kwan’s wife expressed her unwavering commitment to him, proclaiming her intention to provide him with a fulfilling life. She defended his character, asserting his inherent goodness and her dedication to their relationship, indicating her willingness to be buried alongside him.
Prior to his criminal acts, Kwan aspired to acquire a £2 million GP practice in Torquay and possessed approximately £1 million in his NHS pension. Residing in a £500,000 property in Ingleby Barwick with his family, he also held a share of his mother’s estate in Newcastle, valued at an estimated £100,000, which had been altered to benefit Mr. O’Hara in the event of her passing. Mr. O’Hara has since reconciled with his wife and resides with her at Torquil’s residence in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear.
A Ministry of Justice spokesperson confirmed that Kwan, previously a GP in Sunderland, sustained minor injuries during the prison altercation.
