Former owner of Tottenham Hotspur, Joe Lewis, is poised to be pardoned by US President Donald Trump. Lewis, who transferred ownership of Spurs to the Lewis Family Trust in 2022, was fined £4 million for insider trading, but reports suggest he will not return to the north London club.
In 2024, Lewis escaped jail time after a judge considered his frail health and guilty plea in January, leading to leniency from the court. President Trump, who has granted several pardons since taking office after Joe Biden, is expected to extend the same privilege to the former Premier League club chief, as reported by The Telegraph.
A presidential pardon in the US legally forgives a federal crime, effectively halting any further punishment and restoring civil rights. Although federal guidelines indicate a potential two-year prison sentence for such crimes, Lewis will not serve any time incarcerated.
Today, the White House is set to release Lewis’ official pardon, prompting the British billionaire to express relief, stating, “I am pleased that this chapter is closed, allowing me to enjoy retirement while witnessing the growth of our family business based on our commitment to quality and excellence.”
Following Daniel Levy’s exit, the Lewis family has assumed full control of Tottenham, with the club continuing operations under the Lewis name while Joe Lewis remains in retirement. The current Tottenham hierarchy comprises Joe’s daughter Vivienne, son Charles, and Vivienne’s husband Nick Beucher. Eric Hinson recently joined as a non-executive director, working alongside non-executive chairman Peter Charrington and chief executive Vinai Venkatesham.
Levy’s departure as chairman in September marked a transition towards a more conventional management structure at Tottenham, moving away from a model centered around a single individual. In his farewell statement, Levy expressed pride in the club’s accomplishments and the community it has built, thanking fans for their support throughout the years.
