In her childhood days in Detroit, Patty Czajka was captivated by a Canadian TV series set in Prince Edward Island. Every Sunday, she would tune in to watch “Road to Avonlea” with her grandmother, especially admiring actress Mag Ruffman in the role of Aunt Olivia. When Czajka learned about a fan convention in P.E.I. featuring Ruffman, she eagerly purchased a ticket to attend.
Describing Ruffman as her childhood version of a Disney princess, Czajka expressed her excitement at being in P.E.I. for the convention. Fans of “Road to Avonlea” from around the globe gathered on the Island for the sold-out event. The acclaimed Canadian series, which aired in over 100 countries, premiered in 1990 and concluded after seven seasons in 1996.
The convention, spanning three days, offered oyster and wine tastings, as well as panel discussions with the show’s cast and crew. Attendees also explored filming locations, Lucy Maud Montgomery’s birthplace, gravesite, and the inspiration for her renowned work, “Anne of Green Gables.”
Edward Lemon, assistant director of Fine Book Fairs, noted that the show’s enduring appeal lies in its representation of values like kindness and friendship, attracting those seeking an escape. Ruffman shared the emotional connection with fans during the convention, emphasizing how the show continues to resonate even after 30 years.
Czajka revealed that she is now sharing the series with her children, finding joy in reliving the nostalgic moments she cherished in her grandmother’s house. She praised the rarity of a show that can be enjoyed by both adults and kids, highlighting its timeless value and the bond it creates among generations.
