A man standing trial for the alleged abuse and death of his three-month-old baby boy declared himself as “the best dad in the world” in front of the jury. Klevi Pirjani, 37, along with his wife Nivalda Santos Pirjani, 34, is facing charges at Liverpool Crown Court over the death of their son Miguel, who suffered fatal injuries including a fractured skull, brain bleeding, and multiple broken bones. The prosecution accuses the parents of systematically mistreating the child, although the mother has admitted to one charge related to the child’s death.
During his court testimony, Klevi Pirjani, a former chef and digger driver, expressed his deep love and concern for his son, mentioning that he was constantly worried about Miguel’s health and sought medical advice regularly. Refuting allegations of causing harm to his son, Pirjani emotionally defended his actions, emphasizing his care and love for the child.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the family’s residence in Seacombe, Wirral, after Miguel went into cardiac arrest on November 24, 2024. Medical examinations revealed severe injuries, indicating a pattern of serious abuse inflicted on the infant. Miguel remained in a critical condition for several days before succumbing to his injuries despite medical intervention.
Pirjani detailed his family background, including his relocation to the UK from Albania and his relationship with Nivalda. He denied claims of violence towards his wife and reiterated his commitment to his son’s well-being. Pirjani also recounted the events leading up to Miguel’s deterioration and eventual emergency medical response.
The prosecution presented conflicting testimonies between the couple, with Nivalda portraying Klevi as abusive while he refuted her allegations and highlighted their joint responsibilities. Investigations revealed a history of injuries on Miguel that were deemed non-accidental, leading to the prosecution’s assertion that the parents inflicted deliberate harm on the child, resulting in his death.
Both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges of murder and inflicting harm, with Klevi denying the accusation related to the child’s death. The trial is ongoing under the supervision of Mr. Justice Baker.
