Chocoholics are facing a surge in prices for festive treats, with some items experiencing a significant 72% increase since last Christmas, according to recent research. The consumer group Which? has observed a sharp rise in prices for various seasonal essentials. Monitoring over 25,000 food and drink products in eight supermarkets throughout the year, Which? identified chocolate as the most affected category, with prices soaring by an average of 14.2% due to issues like poor cocoa harvests and supply challenges.
Among the notable price hikes, a Lindt Lindor milk chocolate truffles treat box (37g) at Asda has jumped from £1.15 to £1.98, marking a 72.2% increase. Similarly, at Morrisons, Lindt Milk Chocolate Teddy Christmas Tree Decorations have risen from £3.50 to £6, reflecting a 71.4% surge. Additionally, a 40g Lindt Christmas milk chocolate Teddy at Morrisons increased from £1.50 to £2.50, while at Tesco, a 145g Terry’s Chocolate Orange Dark Ball saw a two-thirds price hike from £1.50 to £2.50.
Which? also found significant price increases in the Christmas turkey category, with an overall 4.7% year-on-year rise. Factors such as bird flu outbreaks and escalating operational costs for farmers are contributing to individual price spikes. For instance, a Tesco Finest Free Range Bronze Turkey Crown Medium (2.99kg) surged by £14.95, climbing from £53.82 to £68.77, a 27.8% increase.
The latest data from the Which? tracker reveals that prices at Waitrose have surged the most in the year leading up to November, increasing by 6.2%. In contrast, Asda recorded the lowest inflation rate at 3%, outperforming discount competitors Aldi and Lidl.
Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, highlighted the significant price discrepancies for individual items at supermarkets, urging consumers to consider budget-friendly options like Aldi, Lidl, and Asda. These supermarkets not only have lower inflation rates but also offer competitive prices year-round. Sewraz advised shoppers to compare unit prices across different products to ensure they are getting the best value for their money.
Asda and Morrisons representatives emphasized their commitment to providing quality products at affordable prices, especially during the holiday season. Asda highlighted its low-price strategy benefiting all customers, while Morrisons emphasized their loyalty program offering discounts and rewards to shoppers.
