A former Alaska Airlines pilot confessed to attempting to disable a passenger flight’s engines while off-duty in the cockpit. Joseph David Emerson, 46, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Amy Baggio in Portland, Oregon, to time served and three years of supervised release. The incident occurred on October 22, 2023, on Horizon Air Flight 2059, traveling from Washington to San Francisco.
Emerson, seated in the cockpit jump seat, tried to manipulate the plane’s fuel supply by pulling down two red fire suppression handles. The flight crew managed to restrain him, and the aircraft safely landed in Portland with 84 passengers on board. Emerson cited grief over a friend’s death, sleep deprivation, and prior use of psychedelic mushrooms as factors influencing his actions.
Charged with interfering with a flight crew, Emerson pleaded guilty to federal charges and no-contest to state charges in September 2024. Expressing remorse, he acknowledged the impact of his actions and credited the flight crew for saving lives. Despite losing his career and facing legal repercussions, Emerson viewed the ordeal as an opportunity for personal growth and addressing mental health issues and alcohol dependency.
During sentencing, Emerson’s wife and supporters spoke in his favor, emphasizing his growth and resilience in the face of adversity. The hearing concluded with an emotional embrace between Emerson, his wife, and his legal team, highlighting the transformative journey following the incident.
