A woman who recently became a mother attributed her memory lapses to postpartum “mum brain” before being diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s at 46. Staci Marklin, now 47, from Knoxville, Tennessee, learned about her condition last year when her son was just two. As a former nurse, she initially linked her memory issues to pregnancy and postpartum experiences.

Over time, her struggles with finding words escalated, leading to a brain scan that confirmed Alzheimer’s. Staci, a former hospice nurse, shared, “I was experiencing symptoms during my pregnancy and postpartum period with my son, attributing the forgetfulness to those phases.” Despite concerns due to her grandmother having Alzheimer’s, a doctor reassured her of low chances of early-onset dementia.

While about 1 in 13 Alzheimer’s patients are under 65, Staci expressed anxiety about her family history. She faced challenges as her symptoms worsened, affecting her memory to the extent that she forgot her son’s birthday. Cognitive decline disrupted her work life, with instances of forgetting familiar details like a co-worker’s identity.

After various tests initially showed normal results, further examinations revealed elevated Alzheimer’s markers in Staci’s blood. A definitive diagnosis in October 2024 based on an amyloid PET scan disclosed amyloid plaques in her brain, indicating early-onset Alzheimer’s. Witnessing her cognitive function decline significantly, Staci and her husband confronted the reality of her diagnosis.

Despite skepticism from others due to misconceptions about Alzheimer’s age association, Staci emphasized the importance of acknowledgment and trust in her diagnosis. She prepared for the future by creating TikTok videos for her family and commencing a new treatment, lecanemab, aimed at combatting early-onset Alzheimer’s. The treatment, administered twice monthly, targets brain plaques to slow cognitive deterioration.

Though not covered by the NHS in the UK, Staci remains hopeful about the treatment’s potential benefits. Grappling with life post-diagnosis, she focuses on cherishing moments with her loved ones and creating lasting memories for her son’s future.
