An individual playing amateur football was hospitalized with a fractured skull following an incident in a non-league game. Richard Agbasoga, who works for the NHS, sustained the injury during a 12th-tier match in Liverpool.
Agbasoga, originally from Ghana, is not eligible for sick pay as an overseas student. To assist him during his recovery period, his club, Ormskirk West End, has initiated a fundraising campaign.
Reports from The Athletic suggest that Agbasoga, 27, was assaulted by intruders who entered the field during a match between Ormskirk West End and Calci FC. The attackers, who were not part of the game, allegedly physically assaulted him. Merseyside Police have not yet received a formal complaint regarding the incident.
At the time of the incident, Agbasoga’s team was leading 2-0, and the match was halted following the altercation. Calci FC’s fixtures have been temporarily suspended pending an investigation by the Liverpool County FA disciplinary department.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Agbasoga, who faces up to 12 weeks off work due to his injuries, including the fractured skull. The fundraising efforts have garnered over £2,400 from more than 70 donations.
On social media, many have expressed solidarity with Agbasoga and condemned the attack. The incident has sparked outrage, with individuals emphasizing that violence has no place in sports and urging for justice for the victim.
