The latest rankings for ideal cities for first-time homebuyers have been unveiled, with a Scottish city claiming the top spot for the fourth consecutive year.

Glasgow has once again secured the highest position in the Aldermore First-Time Buyer (FTB) Appeal Index.

The index not only considers property prices and down payments but also factors like commute duration, local amenities, and the presence of young residents, which are crucial for first-time buyers.

Glasgow emerges as the top choice with an average initial home purchase price of £168,828, a typical deposit of £31,856, and an anticipated yearly price appreciation of 6.8%. In comparison, the average house price across the UK stands at £269,000 according to official statistics.

Furthermore, Glasgow boasts the highest concentration of 25 to 35-year-olds among all cities, a thriving local business community, and expanding job prospects.

However, other Scottish urban centers have slipped in the rankings. Dundee, Aberdeen, and Edinburgh have been overtaken by cities in northern England, with Liverpool and Newcastle securing the second and third positions respectively.

On the contrary, southern commuter towns and coastal locations remain the least affordable, with Maidstone, Basildon, Southend, and Chelmsford ranking at the bottom of the list.

Jon Cooper, the mortgages director at Aldermore, remarked, “Glasgow continues to lead as the top city for first-time buyers, with northern cities prominently featured in our rankings for the fourth consecutive year.”

“While challenges in affordability persist, particularly in southern England, our analysis indicates there are still opportunities for those embarking on their first homeownership journey.

“Aldermore welcomes the recent proposal by the FCA on mortgage rule adjustments in the UK, which could facilitate more first-time buyers and self-employed individuals in climbing the property ladder.

“Engaging a broker is highly beneficial for first-time buyers. A skilled broker will support and guide them in finding the most suitable deal at the best available terms, saving time and reducing stress throughout the process.”
