Jessica Pegula, known for her substantial wealth in the tennis world, has suggested that Andy Murray might have taken on the role of Novak Djokovic’s coach out of pure intrigue. Shortly after retiring from professional tennis in the summer of 2024, Murray surprised the tennis community by announcing his decision to coach the 24-time Grand Slam champion.

The two iconic figures joined forces before the Australian Open, where Djokovic reached the semi-finals but had to withdraw due to injury. It was later revealed in May that their partnership had ended by mutual agreement, just six months after they had started working together.

During an episode of The Players Box podcast with Jennifer Brady, Desirae Krawczyk, and Madison Keys, Pegula, who has a net worth of nearly £15 million and is set to inherit a fortune of £5.5 billion, suggested that Murray may have been intrigued by the opportunity to gain insights into Djokovic’s mindset.

Pegula remarked, “I believe he was genuinely interested and curious. He probably thought, ‘This is so unusual, I wonder why you want me as a coach, but I’m also fascinated by how your mind works on the court.’ I observed them together, and it was intriguing.”

Keys also found the partnership between Murray and Djokovic unusual, echoing Pegula’s sentiments that Murray likely wanted to understand what made Djokovic such a formidable opponent.

Despite their split, both Murray and Djokovic have discussed their coaching arrangement. Murray explained that he accepted the coaching position because it presented a unique opportunity, while Djokovic mentioned that they mutually agreed that their partnership had run its course.

Djokovic shared, “It was a mutual decision. We both felt it was time to move on. While it didn’t lead to the results we hoped for, I still learned valuable insights from working with him.”
