Keir Starmer has unveiled fresh funding to enhance security at mosques following his visit to one that was recently subjected to a suspected arson attack.

The government has announced a £10 million allocation for mosques and Muslim faith centers to safeguard them against hate crimes and assaults. This financial injection aims to support security enhancements such as CCTV systems, alarm installations, secure fencing, and security personnel.

The announcement coincided with Mr. Starmer’s visit to the Peacehaven mosque in East Sussex, where he expressed his gratitude for the experience. The fire that occurred on October 4, damaging the mosque’s front entrance and a vehicle, caused no injuries. Sussex Police confirmed the arrest of three individuals on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life in connection with the incident.

In a statement on Thursday, Mr. Starmer emphasized the importance of unity and protection for all communities. He highlighted the significance of the funding in granting Muslim communities the safety and peace they deserve to thrive in their environment.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood also condemned the attack on the Peacehaven Mosque, emphasizing the fundamental rights of individuals to practice their faith without fear or discrimination. She called for solidarity against acts of violence and intimidation targeting any community or faith.

Akeela Ahmed, CEO of the British Muslim Trust, expressed appreciation for the funding, emphasizing the importance of upholding freedom of religious beliefs and practices as essential pillars of British values. She highlighted the need for all individuals to live without fear or intimidation based on their identities, particularly within Muslim communities facing vandalism, arson, and mistreatment in their sacred spaces.
