Neil Kinnock has cautioned that Keir Starmer must showcase “effective leadership” of the Labour Party within a few months, rather than years, and expressed disapproval of the Downing Street team.

The former Labour leader from 1983 to 1992 voiced his concerns about some of Starmer’s advisors in No10 and their lack of essential political skills. Kinnock highlighted “fundamental mistakes” such as the controversy surrounding cuts to winter fuel payments, which have overshadowed the accomplishments of the Labour government’s initial 15 months.

These remarks were made during an interview on BBC’s Westminster Hour following a tumultuous period for the Prime Minister. Recent events included the resignation of Deputy PM Angela Rayner over unpaid taxes on a second property and the dismissal of Peter Mandelson as the UK’s ambassador to America.

Additionally, Labour is bracing for a challenging by-election in Wales this week and significant elections in May 2026 in England, Scotland, and Wales, with Reform UK led by Nigel Farage currently leading in the polls.

Regarding Starmer’s tenure, Kinnock emphasized the need for prompt action to establish a clear direction and purpose. He acknowledged Starmer’s intelligence and principles but stressed the importance of demonstrating authentic Labour values and decisive implementation of policies.

Kinnock underlined the necessity for effective management by Starmer to address past errors and ensure a positive trajectory for the government. He urged Starmer to showcase his advocacy skills and inspire confidence within the party and the public.

Moreover, Kinnock raised concerns about the performance of the No10 team, expressing hope that they would swiftly improve their connection with the Labour Party and enhance their political acumen.
