In a proactive move, a supporter of the Labour party has taken a stand against potential government restrictions on children’s social media access. Dale Vince, a vocal critic, criticized tech moguls Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg for what he perceives as unchecked influence over young people.

Responding to parents’ top concern, the founder of Ecotricity, a green energy company, has introduced a mobile plan that provides unlimited calls and texts for kids but excludes internet access. Vince, a millionaire, argued that this traditional plan is necessary due to the harmful content children encounter online, and he called on government officials to take action.

This development comes amidst mounting pressure on the government to prohibit social media use for individuals under 16. Recently, over 60 Labour MPs urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to follow Australia’s lead in implementing such a ban. Various other countries are reportedly contemplating similar measures, with Starmer not ruling out the possibility of a ban, stating that all options are being considered.

One of Vince’s ventures, Ecotalk, has launched a new SIM-only mobile plan named Just Talk, offering unlimited UK calls and texts starting at £4 per month. Notably, this plan does not grant access to the internet, distinguishing it from most existing options in the market.

Vince emphasized the importance of the Just Talk tariff in limiting the influence of tech giants on children. By fulfilling a key customer request, especially from parents, to provide a communication tool without online distractions, this initiative aims to restore the essence of communication devices and childhood innocence. Vince underscored the issue of irresponsible tech platforms exposing young people to undue pressure and risks.

Taking a proactive stance, Vince highlighted the company’s commitment to safeguarding children from the excessive influence of tech industry leaders. Ecotalk, established by Vince in 2018, collaborates with ecologist Chris Packham to spearhead conservation efforts in Sussex and Devon, focusing on rewilding and environmental restoration projects.
