Millions of individuals throughout the United Kingdom may be encountering a common issue that could go unnoticed initially but will certainly be felt when the cold winter weather sets in. Even with the heating system running, this problem could lead to wasted money and a lack of warmth.

Around 9.6 million households in the UK are residing in inadequately insulated homes, making them susceptible to cold draughts. This statistic is derived from an analysis of the English Housing Survey conducted by the Institute of Health Equity and Friends of the Earth UK.

Various factors contribute to this issue, such as older homes constructed before modern energy efficiency standards were implemented or insufficient insulation in the loft and cavity walls.

Fortunately, there are simple measures that can make homes feel more comfortable immediately. Experts from Which?, an independent consumer organization, advise that implementing a few basic tips this winter can significantly enhance comfort and reduce energy expenses.

Emily Seymour, an energy and sustainability editor, stresses the importance of draught proofing during this season. She recommends inspecting window frames, door frames, and other potential entry points for drafts, then sealing any gaps to make the home feel cosier.

To combat window and door draughts, utilize weatherstripping, draught excluder strips, caulk, or silicone sealant. For loft hatch draughts, apply self-adhesive foam or rubber strips. Additionally, consider using electric heaters or blankets to directly warm yourself instead of heating entire rooms.

Furthermore, James Aitchison, a senior energy researcher, advises consumers to review their energy bills and evaluate fixed energy tariffs to shield themselves from fluctuating prices. Fixed tariffs offer a consistent rate for energy consumption, contrasting with variable tariffs that can change monthly.
