A distressed mother sensed a potent odor resembling nail varnish remover before her residence exploded, prompting her son to leap from a window to ensure his safety.
Cheryl Whitter, 44, witnessed her life shattered as an e-bike unexpectedly burst into flames in her living room, causing a fire that rapidly spread throughout the house. The incident occurred at her residence on Lewis Road in Mitcham last Friday morning, leaving behind a scene of destruction captured in striking images.
Following the incident, Cheryl and her four children, Kyron, Che, Lexi, and Karim, were relocated to a Premier Inn in Colliers Wood due to their now uninhabitable home where they had resided for over a decade. Overwhelmed by the trauma, Cheryl has refrained from speaking out, but her sister shared details with MyLondon.
The blaze, ignited by a faulty lithium-ion battery in the e-bike, emitted a distinct nail varnish-like smell that permeated the entire house before the bike exploded dramatically. Acting swiftly, Cheryl rescued her youngest child, Karim, and fled to the garden. However, Che was initially unaccounted for, leading to a tense moment as the flames engulfed the property.
Debbie Whitter, a full-time carer from Coulsdon, recounted the harrowing experience of receiving news about the inferno and fearing for her sister’s life. She emphasized the rapid spread of the fire due to the absence of a door separating the living room, and lamented the house’s design flaw that contributed to the explosion.
Despite the challenges they face, Cheryl and her children have been receiving support from the community, including temporary accommodation and donations of essential items. AFC Wimbledon, in particular, has contributed by providing beds and mattresses for the family.
Debbie, who has been a constant presence by Cheryl’s side, expressed relief that her sister and the children survived the ordeal. She acknowledged the outpouring of aid from the local community and remained optimistic about Cheryl’s recovery from the traumatic event.
