A sinkhole opened up in front of a coastal mansion in Malibu reportedly owned by actor Nicolas Cage, causing the driveway to collapse. The incident led to a gas leak that was brought under control by local authorities and SoCalGas. As a precaution, natural gas services in the area were temporarily shut off due to concerns about coastal erosion.
The sinkhole, measuring 7.5 to nine meters deep and 18 meters wide, extended into the roadway, prompting officials to declare a local emergency and evacuate 31 nearby properties. Property records indicate that Cage purchased the mansion in 2024, although representatives for the actor did not respond to requests for comment.
The mansion sustained damage during a coastal flooding advisory in the Los Angeles area caused by remnants of Hurricane Marie, which transitioned into a tropical storm. The City of Malibu stated that the incident was related to broader coastal conditions affecting the region.
Situated between the ocean and the Pacific Coast Highway, the private neighborhood where the mansion is located faces ongoing challenges from coastal erosion. Cage, 62, known for his roles in numerous films, including an Oscar-winning performance in “Leaving Las Vegas,” recently starred in the Amazon series “Spider-Noir” and will portray John Madden in an upcoming biographical film.
