Tens of thousands of music enthusiasts flocked to Great Park in Irvine, California, to enjoy live performances by their favorite artists during a groundbreaking event dedicated to supporting women’s health, reproductive rights, and combating gender-based violence.
Known as Daisy Chain Fields, this charity music festival was organized by popular singer Olivia Rodrigo, drawing inspiration from the iconic Lilith Fair of the 1990s, which featured an all-female lineup. The festival showcased a mix of both emerging and established artists, including queer pop sensation Chappell Roan, rapper Doechii, punk legends Bikini Kill, and rock icons Garbage.
Before the festival kicked off, Rodrigo revealed that they had successfully raised $10 million for 10 non-profit organizations such as Planned Parenthood and the National Institute for Reproductive Health. This impressive fundraising effort was further boosted by a matching donation of $10 million from Melinda French Gates, bringing the total amount raised to $20 million.
The idea for Daisy Chain Fields was unveiled by Rodrigo in June, with a commitment to have all artists perform for free, with proceeds going towards charities supporting women and girls. The festival paid tribute to trailblazers in the music industry, with special appearances by music legends like Stevie Nicks, Alanis Morissette, and Sarah McLachlan.
Against the backdrop of ongoing challenges to reproductive rights in the United States, Daisy Chain Fields served as a platform to raise awareness and funds for critical causes. The festival showcased a diverse lineup of 14 artists, including Mitski, Santigold, The Breeders, and Eli, who captivated the audience with their performances.
In addition to music, attendees had the opportunity to engage with various art installations, including a LEGO mural and an exhibit tracing the Riot Grrrl movement. The festival also featured interactive experiences like tying wishes to a tree and messages advocating for social causes on giant chalkboards.
Despite the scorching temperatures reaching above 33°C, festivalgoers like Chase Martinez described Daisy Chain Fields as the “best festival ever,” emphasizing the uplifting atmosphere and sense of community among attendees. The event’s philanthropy village provided a platform for non-profit organizations to showcase their work and educate visitors about their causes.
The festival’s success was not only measured by the funds raised but also by the sense of unity and empowerment it fostered among participants.
