Skywatchers in the Americas, Europe, and Africa were treated to a striking sight of a partial lunar eclipse on Thursday evening extending into Friday. This lunar eclipse, known as the “almost blood moon,” reached its peak just after midnight ET, with Earth’s shadow covering 96 percent of the moon’s visible surface, resulting in a near-total lunar eclipse. This rare event will not repeat until New Year’s Eve in 2028.

In Canada, residents in Vancouver witnessed the full moon during a phase of the lunar eclipse against the night sky. Similarly, in Winnipeg, the partial lunar eclipse was captured above Osborne Village. The R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant in Toronto also provided a picturesque backdrop for observing the partial lunar eclipse.

In other parts of the Americas, a person in Texas snapped a cellphone photo of the lunar eclipse from the George Observatory at Brazos Bend State Park. The Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., served as the backdrop for another stunning view of the partial lunar eclipse, while in New Orleans, the Caesars Superdome’s golden edge framed the celestial event. The moon shining over the Mexican flag in Ciudad Juarez and rising behind a coconut palm in Salvador, Bahia state, Brazil, were other captivating moments captured during the partial lunar eclipse.

Across Europe, Warsaw residents witnessed the moon during a partial lunar eclipse in the night sky. In London, observers gathered on Parliament Hill at Hampstead Heath to take in the breathtaking sight. Meanwhile, in Lisbon, a plane approached for landing against the backdrop of the partial lunar eclipse. The mystical view of the lunar eclipse in Goutz, France, rounded off the celestial spectacle across Europe.
