Rory McIlroy has endorsed a new award to honor the top DP World Tour player in the Major tournaments each year, except for the Masters champion who is ineligible for the prize.

The Ulsterman recently secured a career Grand Slam by winning at Augusta, becoming the first European to do so. The DP World Tour has introduced the Rory McIlroy Award, recognizing the player who excels in all four Major Championships annually.

Despite being the namesake of the award, McIlroy is not permitted to win it. He expressed his satisfaction with this decision, stating that it was a collective choice. The award, named after him, acknowledges his exceptional on-course performances and his unwavering support for the tour, including participating in events in India and Australia.

McIlroy reflected on the significance of having an award named after him and expressed eagerness to present it to future deserving winners. He mentioned the honor of being associated with esteemed awards like the Sir Henry Cotton Award, Harry Vardon Trophy, and Seve Ballesteros Award.

The golfer, who recently completed a career Grand Slam, acknowledged the privilege of having his name linked to the DP World Tour award and emphasized the importance of inspiring future generations through such accolades.

McIlroy, aiming to defend his title at the DP World Tour Championships, is vying for a fourth consecutive Race to Dubai victory. He aims to surpass his shared record with Ballesteros and chase Colin Montgomerie’s eight wins, including seven consecutive victories.

Reflecting on his sustained excellence, McIlroy praised the consistency required in European golf where tough competition was prevalent alongside names like Faldo, Lyle, and Woosie.

After a strong performance in Abu Dhabi, McIlroy remains optimistic about his game and aims to continue his good form in the upcoming tournament.
