Top Conservative politician Chris Philp struggled to identify the leader of his party in Wales during a challenging TV interview. The Shadow Home Secretary faced difficulty when asked by GB News presenter Chris Hope to name the leader, evading the question several times before admitting he couldn’t recall the name. Hope pointed out that the leader is Darren Millar and criticized the Conservative party’s standing in Wales.

Philp defended his party’s commitment to governing the entire country, highlighting initiatives discussed at the party conference such as welfare savings, stamp duty cuts, immigration control, and increased police recruitment. Darren Millar took over as leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the Senedd after Andrew RT Davies’ resignation in December. Davies had faced a vote of no confidence due to party direction concerns.

The Welsh Conservatives recently garnered only 2% of the vote in a Caerphilly by-election, trailing behind Plaid Cymru, Reform, and Labour. Philp faced scrutiny over his response to Reform MP Sarah Pochin’s controversial comments on racial diversity in advertising. Initially hesitant to label the remarks as racist, Philp later denounced Pochin’s comments as racist on LBC radio, emphasizing the need for accountability and apology.

Philp, representing Croydon South, condemned Pochin’s statements, affirming they were inappropriate and racist. Pochin issued an apology for her remarks, acknowledging their inappropriate and offensive nature.
