As winter approaches, staying warm and cozy without breaking the bank on energy bills is a top priority for many. Fortunately, making small, affordable changes around the house can make a significant difference in comfort and cost savings.

Renowned home organizer and TV personality, Dilly Carter, shares some valuable advice on preparing our homes for the colder months.

“When it comes to nighttime heating, focus on warming your bed rather than the entire house,” suggests Dilly. Switching to a winter duvet, layering with an extra blanket, or using an electric blanket can create a cozy sleeping environment without excessive energy usage.

To enhance insulation and prevent heat loss, Dilly recommends adding inexpensive, thicker linings to existing curtains. Improving the house’s insulation is key to reducing energy expenses.

Regarding heating efficiency, Dilly emphasizes the importance of bleeding radiators in all rooms to ensure optimal heat distribution. Setting and programming the heating timer to operate only when necessary can also contribute to cost savings.

To maximize heat circulation, she advises rearranging furniture that obstructs radiators and avoiding blocking bedroom radiators with hanging clothes.

Dilly highlights that there are numerous budget-friendly ways to keep homes warm during winter, some of which require little to no investment. Installing a smart meter is a simple step towards managing energy costs effectively.

“A smart meter provides real-time insights into energy consumption, allowing you to identify areas where you can cut back,” explains Dilly. These meters, offered by energy suppliers at no additional cost, display energy usage in monetary terms, aiding in better energy management.

Dilly underscores that prioritizing basic energy-saving practices can go a long way in reducing costs without the need for expensive energy-efficient technology.

Remember, eligibility for certain services may vary, and the figures displayed on smart meters are for illustrative purposes only.
